Som Dela (“her sound” in Portuguese) is a new quartet composed of four outstanding  Bay Area musicians: Jane Lenoir, flute; Irene Sazer, violin; Rebecca Hass, piano; and Michaelle Goerlitz, percussion.

All virtuosic and eclectic musicians and composers in Brazilian music and other improvised styles, they have forged well-earned careers in many diverse groups they have performed with, including Berkeley Choro Ensemble, Real Vocal String Quartet, Modern Spark Trio, SF Opera, Ballet and Symphony, VNote Ensemble, Grupo Falso Baiano, Samba Rio, Montclair Women’s Big Band and more.

The ensemble is dedicated to performing music by women composers from Brazil, including their original compositions, as well as the music of Léa Freire, Luisa Mitre, Carol Panesi, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Anat Cohen, Daniella Spielmann, Lucianna Rabello, and more.

“With a repertoire spanning more than a century of musical innovation by female Brazilian composers, the Bay Area quartet Som Dela (Her Sound) brings consummate musicianship and abundant passion to a gorgeous program of choro, samba, forró, Brazilian jazz, and beyond.

The four women also contribute original compositions to the verdant mix, delivering an intoxicating brew that combines chamber ensemble precision with exuberant spirit of a dance combo.”
